ECO-NAT MICROORGANISMS  AND MANURE COMPOST

Case Study: Muang Compost Plant, Chachoengsao, Thailand.

Date: 23rd June 2007

Abstract

The use of eco-nat microorganisms for reducing bad odor and improving the decompose process has often been suggested as feasible in fertilizer compost  plants. The organisms are supposed to eliminate the bad odor produced, with the benefits of non-pathogenic bacteria in fertilizer, and consequently lower costs and decreased impacts upon the environment. This project aimed to test the hypothesis that Eco-Nat is beneficial in improving the compost process. Study was undertaken, at Muang Compost Plant , Chachoengsao, Thailand. Results from Muang showed a significant decrease in odor level with Eco-Nat application, improved compost process. There was a significantly improvement compared to the previous method of decompose. There was no bad odor and the compost process has been shorten . We can conclude that there is an improvement to indicate a clear benefit from the use of Eco-Nat in manure compost.

1 Introduction

Problem facing compost plants is the quality of fertilizers through the compost process does not meet the expected end result where moisture , time ,odor and pathogens are manage poorly. At present time, there are a number of methods being used to improve the management and the operation process at compost plants. Although there are many methods used, there are numerous concerns raised regarding the speed of decomposing, pathogens and odor. This requires the selection of a correct  method focusing on efficient and environmentally safe application. New technologies are being produced to assist in the process and conforms to environmental regulations. One of these new technologies being proposed is the use of Eco-Nat Microorganisms . The technology of Eco-Nat Microorganisms  was developed during the 1970’s . Studies have suggested that Eco-Nat has a number of applications, including agriculture, livestock, gardening and landscaping, composting, bioremediation, waste-water treatment, algae control and household uses .

Eco-Nat microorganisms is a mixture of groups of organisms that has a reviving action on humans, animals, and the natural environment and has also been described as a facultative beneficial microorganisms. The main species involved in Eco-Nat include:

 Pediococcus P.

Dekkera F.

Pichia B.

The heat in the composting materials is produced by bacterial activity (biological burning). By using Eco-nat , this critical buildup of heat can be sustained, significantly reducing the time of composting. As materials are used up or decomposed and bacterial activity slows down - the compost heap will begin to cool.

1.1 Activating the Eco-Nat Microorganisms

Eco-Nat is available in a dormant state and requires activation before application. Activation:

involves the addition of 1000 L of  water and 1.0 kg of dormant Eco-Nat to 50 ton of manure. Wait 15 minutes after activation and spray onto manure. Mix with a mixer .

1.2 Chicken Manure study

50 ton of manure were mixed with  1.0 kg activated Eco-Nat microorganism  water solution.

2 Results of Chicken Manure Monitoring

Five parameters were observed.

2.1 Odor Level

There was a reduction in odor. After two hours, odor has been reduced significantly.

2.2 Pathogens

Analysis of the manure was done on gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Result was negative.

2.3 Moisture

Measured at 35% compared to 70%.

2.4 N.P.K

The results obtained from the analysis of N.P.K remained the same.

2.5 Process

Process period was shorten to 30 days. Process was sped up compare to before.

3 Conclusion

This study was undertaken to determine if the application of Eco-Nat microorganisms would improve the compost process. There was significant improvement on odor removal, pathogen removal, moisture reduction and time saving. Therefore, based on the results obtained from this study, it was concluded that the use of Eco-Nat on producing fertilizer from chicken manure is effective and this has helped Muang Compost Plant in saving time and money in the day to day operation and production of fertilizers.
